About
In 1992 Portia and Jason started The Africa Café restaurant in Observatory, Cape Town. At the time it was unique, being the first African restaurant in South Africa. Maybe it was ahead of its time, but the conventional wisdom of bankers and those who make finance possible said it wouldn't work. So the couple weren't able to raise any capital and decided to start the business in their home.

Multi talented Portia had an American degree in fashion design, but she dug deep into the store of knowledge she had inherited from her African mother and started cooking for customers. They also chose to showcase Africa in the Décor, Artwork, the garments the waitresses wore and even the Crockery.

The vividly coloured ranges of ceramics produced by Clementina were a perfect match for the menu. At first the couple could only afford ten plates so only one or two tables per night were fortunate enough to eat off the new crockery. Then customers would ask for their plates to be washed and the price added to their bill. This was the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship with Clementina and her Ceramicists.
